Hiba timber is popular in Japan as a building material for shrines as it has natural antimicrobial qualities and repels mold and pests. It retains these qualities as an essential oil for aromatic purposes.
Although both belonging to the cypress family, we consider the Aomori Hiba Essential Oil to have slightly woodier and earthier notes than the Yoshino Hinoki Oil. The Aomori Hiba is reminiscent of Australian Huon Pine.
